Cornwall Golf Alliance at Perranporth Golf Club... 84 Members played on a sunny spring like day with a southerly breeze in the Cornwall golf alliance where professionals and amateurs from Cornwall golf clubs team up and compete for prizes throughout the winter. |
Chris Gill continued his recent good form, sharing the professional award with myself on one under par, closely followed by Paul Turpin and Joe Cruse on level par. The Newquay four of Chris Gill, Dev Adey, David Savage and Carl White won the team prize with 91 points (best 2 scores to count) with my team consisting of Mike Pamphilon (club captain), Mark Twynham (club caterer) and Josh Chaplin scoring 84 points to claim 4th place overall. Tony Reynolds, the Perranporth President, welcomed the Alliance to the club and presented the awards. I thanked the club for hosting the event, the course was in superb condition with the hospitality excellent as usual. |

Sharpen up your game… With February half term having come and gone, we have noticed more visitors around the club and couldn’t have asked for better weather for the time of year as it almost felt like spring. As this is the case and people are thinking more and more about getting back into regular golf for the coming season, why not book a lesson to sharpen up your game? I offer many different types of golf lessons ranging from indoor (academy) lessons, to outdoor practice scenario sessions or even playing lessons on the golf course itself. Each type of lesson carries certain benefits such as in the indoor academy the swing can be recorded and played back slowly allowing a detailed analysis which helps the pupil clearly understand where the fault is and how to rectify the fault. The outdoor scenario sessions are great for any short game shots or ball striking and ball flight improvements. Finally a playing lesson which always seems to be a popular golf lesson. This allows me to see all areas of a golfers game and therefore gives me the opportunity to help the pupil improve anything from course management to sloping or rough lies and how to manage them and improve in many areas. I play alongside the pupil which is very powerful as I can demonstrate shots allowing the pupil to see how to approach a shot and execute it too. Lessons start from £25 for a 45 minute session either in the indoor academy or on the practice area outside. A playing lesson varies from £35 for 5 holes or you could take advantage of 9 holes for just £45. If you are interested in a golf lesson then please contact me in the golf shop on 01326 241176 or direct on my mobile 07879436813. You can also click here to get in touch.

75 yards? Up-and-down for me... |
The majority of golfers know how far they hit their driver and irons with a full swing, but wedges require you to be a lot more accurate if you want to start shooting better scores. So, whilst it can be useful to know how far a full PW or LW goes, you'll benefit far more from dialling in your wedges so you can hit specific distances that you regularly find yourself with on the course. |
Give yourself options You'll notice that different swings with each wedge will result in yardages that overlap - see table above. This is important as it'll give you options when considering the conditions. For example, if you're facing a strong breeze, we'd suggest going up a club and utilising a shorter swing so the ball flies lower with less spin, helping it to penetrate through the wind. |
Dial in with Callaway We'd recommend having a wedge system of the same brand and model, so you remove any variables in feel and spin across wedges. One model that we love is Callaway’s Mack Daddy 4 wedge. Its new Groove-In-Groove technology provides brilliant control and spin no matter if you're playing from the rough or the fairway, whilst 21 loft-bounce combinations give us a fantastic array of options to pick from when finding you the perfect set-up to improve your wedge play. |
